The problem with the Democratic Party in general is that they've been so afraid to lose they're willing to say whatever it takes to win. And once you're willing to say whatever it takes to win, you lose. ~~Dean

So you think you own this site -- even just a little?

Fri Feb 09, 2007 at 05:08:15 PM PDT

I'm frankly mystified in how one can believe that we as posters -- even those of us who paid for lifetime subscriptions -- to this site have any degree of ownership interest in it.  If you are saying that we have an obligation to be responsible enough so as to not cause this site to be thought of as little more than some online playground for the liberally bent, I suppose I could agree with you to that extent.  But I don't believe that is what you are saying.

One thing is clear, and should be held above all else, and that is that this site is owned lock, stock and barrel by Markos Moulitas, and no matter how long any of us have posted here, or how often, or how many others our pearls of wisdom have attracted or kept posting, this is his site, and we continue to post here at his suffrage.

Michigan Kossacks Meet Tonight!

These are just some of the luminaries who won't be at tonight's Fourth Occasional Meeting of the SE Michigan Chapter of the DailyKos Bloviator's Club and Benevolent Assoication.  But, DHinMI, emptywheel, Dump Terry McAuliffe, Cordelia Lear, Liberal Lucy, Rob Cole, Olds 88, and a host of others will be.  Unfortunately, Funny David Boyle is currently on assignment in the West -- something about locating retirement digs for Cheney, I think -- and maybeeso said she's, well, rather fittingly, "a maybeeso."

This time, we're trying a new locale, Ann Arbor/Ypsi's progressive heroes' Matt and Réne Gref's Corner Brewery.  Here's the details:

Kossacks in the Actors' Studio

Sun Aug 13, 2006 at 06:57:54 AM PDT

It's an easy Sunday morning, and since we've now gone past the 100,000 uid, I thought it might be interesting for everyone to see what this little survey might reveal about us.  Many (most) of us are familiar with the Bravo program, Inside the Actors' Studio.

And, if so, you are certainly familiar with the segment where James Lipton draws on the questionnaire developed by the host of the French (I love the French, don't you?) program Bouillon de Culture, Bernard Pivot.

MI-09: May I ask a favor?

Thu Jun 22, 2006 at 06:03:18 PM PDT

As many of you are aware, Democracy for America is currently hosting an online vote to determine who will be the next Democratic congressional candidate to receive its DFA-List endorsement.  The original list of approximately 30 candidates was pared down to 5 semi-finalists, and I am here to ask for your support of Nancy Skinner the first legitimate grassroots candidate to take on Joe "Mr. Inertia" Knollenberg in the Michigan 9th.

We here in the district know that we have real chance of unseating this 7-term lummox, and we are esspecially confident that, in Nancy Skinner, we have just the candidate to do it.

So, I am humbly asking that you go on over to the DFA Grassroots All-Star Page, and vote for Nancy Skinner.

Abramoff, Feds Close to Deal; Jack to Name Names

Sat Dec 31, 2005 at 12:17:40 PM PDT

According to the AP, as printed in the New York Times [Ed.], federal prosecutors and attorneys for our pal Abramoff are close to a deal which, if the reporting is correct, could net as many as 20 congress members and staff.

Take the deal, Jack.  It's the only way
to maintain leverage.

What REALLY happened at the U.N. (A photo montage)

As world leaders gathered today for the World Summit and 60th Meeting of the General Assembly, we join the American President . . .

So who's the next gasbag we have to sit through?

Oh, shit, it's that frog, de Villepin.

Your God is one with whom I am not familiar

Thu Sep 08, 2005 at 07:23:09 PM PDT

I heard this most poignant commentary yesterday morning, while listening to the NPR program New & Notes with Ed Gordon.  It's from commentator Tim Wise, a former New Orleans resident and one of the leading anti-racist scholars and lecturers in the country today.

His work has been hailed by many, and he had traveled most the entire country talking to audiences anbout the abomination of racism.

So, if you would, please take a listen.

I think that it's well worth your time.

Sunday night tension reliever

Sun Jun 26, 2005 at 01:48:31 PM PDT

We've read it all before: Armando is an asshole.  DHinMI gets under my skin.  Maryscott has a potty mouth.  Bob Johnson isn't even as funny as his dog.  Teacherken is a pedant.  Meteor Blades is a prolix pontificator given to overwrought intertextualizations, tortured analogies, and unnecessarily complex analytical deconstructionism. (Okay, maybe you haven't heard that last one.)

So, let's get the shit out in the open.  There are too damn many people too damn pissed off at too damn many others around this place.  All this hate, phlegm and bile; it just isn't good for the Community. Is that maudlin enough?

It incites us to stunningly uncareful, unfocused, and unwieldy rantings that do little but diffuse our petty dislikes, flinging fertilizer like a broadcast spreader, and everyone ends up with a bit of stink on them.  Time's come to get our shit together and keep it together in one convenient place.

[TAKING] Tonight's Conference Call with Armando!

Sat Jun 25, 2005 at 03:13:53 PM PDT

W-e-l-l-l-l-l-l . . . .

If you're given to sensationalisizing diary entries, so too can I.  So, Armando probably won't call The Sidetrack Bar & Grill/Frenchie's Freedom's Frenchie's tonight (though if he did, the number is (734) 483-1035), but you can be there to get some satiating food, potent potables (for 10, Art), and all the DHinMI you can handle.  You'll come for the conversation and kosraderie, and leave with more brains than you had before you got there.

The festivities start at 7:00, and are likely to last until Maryscott can fly in.

Frist-Flop says he can't beat Dems on Bolton [UPDATED]

Tue Jun 21, 2005 at 11:30:32 AM PDT

Finally, the man who bragged that he "cut hearts out for a living" has given up the ghost on trying to get John Bolton's nomination through the Senate.  Conceding that the president lacks the votes to get the nomination past the 60-vote threashold needed to end debate, he will not bring the nomination back onto the floor for further consideration.  Thus, the obvios choices are fro the president to withdraw the nomination, give Bolton a recess appointment, or (horror of horrors) give the intelligence committee leadership the information needed for the Democrats to fully assess Bolton's nomination and provide consent if warranted.

Of course, Frist never put it that way.  He whined:

"Whether it is politics or whatever their concerns are with, the goal posts constantly shifting. Bringing up another vote's not going to change anything."

Springsteen - Devils and Dust Tour Opening Night

Tue Apr 26, 2005 at 03:25:22 AM PDT

Last night, I saw the future of rock and . . . Oh, wait.  That's been done, hasn't it?  Okay, well then, we here in Detroit have seen the past and present of rock and roll, and it's just as vibrant and relevant as it was 30 years ago when I first saw Bruce Springsteen.  Tonight he kicked off a two-month U.S-European concert tour supporting his largely solo acoustic 19th recording, Devils and Dust.

This was really something special, and if you get the chance, I cannot urge you stongly enough to gosee this man perform.  This is all the more true if you have never seen him do a solo acoustic evening of songs as this tour will be.  Drawing largely off the new record and spinning off those songes into some old favorites and long-quiet keepers, this show was a wonderful mix of a repertoire that now spans some three-and-a-half decades of recordings and almost three-and-a-half hundred recorded songs.

I Got a 'God' in Kalamazoo

Fri Apr 22, 2005 at 09:28:04 AM PDT

Okay, well precisely a god, but, to be rather more precise, an Intellignet Designer, and if you don't let these good God- Intelligent Designer-fearing teachers instruct students in the suburban Kalamazoo (Mi.) school district of Gull Lake supplement their science text with the serupticiously religios tract, Of Pandas and People, which is, in reality, nothing more than a bogus propaganda piece masquerading as an edited textbook.  The aim of its editors is simple: to advance the fundamentalist notion of creationism (or what they refer to as creation science) through the idea of intelligent design.

C-SPAN ALERT: Who is a Journalist?

Fri Apr 08, 2005 at 06:18:48 AM PDT

The irony of compassionate conservatism

Sat Mar 19, 2005 at 06:49:16 AM PDT

I don't do many diaries, and even this began as a comment to Hunter's excellent piece, In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, but as I kept writing, I recalled the interview I heard yesterday on Fresh Air with Karen Armstong and just how well her enlightenment and view of religion and compassion melded with what Hunter wrote about empathy and doing for others.

So, below the fold, a few thoughts:

TONIGHT'S MICHIGAN DKOS MEETING IS STILL ON

Sat Jan 22, 2005 at 01:08:22 PM PDT

THE MEETING IS ON!

Arbor Brewing Co.
114 E. Washington
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
734-213-1393

January 22, 2005, at 7:00pm

Well, just in time for the soiree, Mother Nature's daughter, Alberta, decided to send over a clipper's worth of snow, making driving to Ann Arbor for the scheduled meeting at the Arbor Brewing Company problematic, at best.

We still have the room reserved, but turnout may be, well, sparse.

Sorry to burn a diary on this, but I need to give our hosts an idea of whether we are going to be dropping by.  If you live in Michigan, please write here and let us know whether you will be able to attend tonight.

Thanks,

emptywheel, DHinMI & GOTV

DH, check your email.
